colorful things.

My afghan is coming along nicely! i have two panels of eight granny squares done. I'm using the leftover yarn from my coraline to join the squares, and I'm joining as I go... I really love this method, it makes it so much easier than I thought it would be! i think the colors are fabulous too! i need to restrain myself, i'm already thinking about what color i could do an edge in, but i think that might be overkill.

My gorgeous friend Raquel did my hair last Friday! It was time for something super fun. I'd been doing the same color for so long, I needed to break out of it! i really love the idea of bringing color into your life, however big or small you do it. so....

.... Raquel put a pretty teal panel in under my bangs! i told her i wanted to do a cool tone, and she picked the color out. i pretty much love it! it's the exact same color as the teal in my afghan!

i made a new bow too, out of felt this time... it was really simple, and i really love the way it looks! it turned out pretty much perfect. i've been trying to make ribbon bows recently and i've been having trouble getting the shape right, but with the felt i got it right the very first time!

annnd here's a silly photo of chris and i on our way out to a party! i love his new hat!

happy tuesday!

visits.

i went home at the beginning of the month to hang out with my family and to celebrate my grandma's 75th birthday. when i was there my dad and i got to talking about him coming down to visit sometime. i really didn't think it would happen... he's got a 6 year old and 4 year old at home, plus he and my stepmom run a business together that is impossible to get away from. it ended up working out well, my stepmom and the kids drove up to canada for a vacation with her family, and he was able to take saturday and sunday off to come down here. i got really excited and started preparing like crazy! i'm not gonna lie, chris and i don't keep the cleanest apartment! both of our hobbies require a lot of space, so there was a ton of organizing to do! i also redecorated a little, which was a lot of fun!

i baked banana bread just for fun! it turned out pretty well, it definitely settled or something after a day or two and got denser and more moist. i used this recipe, with walnuts...!

i've had a photo wall pretty much since we moved in, full of cheapo dollar store frames. i wanted to paint them all one color for a little more cohesive look. unfortunately i'm clumsy and broke some in the process, so there are some bare spots...! top to bottom: my dad (in the 80s, he was really embarrassed when he saw that hanging! it's my fave photo though), my little sister Mikayla and I, my mom (from the 70s), and my childhood dog Lucy.

there's also a bunch of pictures of chris and i! don't look at our ugly ac unit, i hate it!

we took a little tour down north avenue during the Sweet Corn Festival. It was pretty fun, but we were so full we didn't eat any corn!! We stopped at a cute little shop called the Garlic Press and he bought me this bag. I saw it a while ago and fell in love! It's the perfect quote. I plan on spraying the bag with a sealant or something, or just not using it... I'm horrible with whites!

I got the Sundara yarn that Chris and i bought for my birthday and cast on for the Featherweight cardigan. my gauge is a little off because it's sock yarn, not lace. i'm still using size 6 needles, but the fabric is a little denser and i'm hoping it'll be a bit roomy.

that's it for now-
hope you had a great weekend!!

late night.

i haven't had much to blog about lately (or ever)... crafting is going on but i have so little free time that isn't spent sleeping! i've been getting a lot of inspiration from other bloggers though... I have a super crush on Elsie of abeautifulmess/Red Velvet Art. She's one of the cutest girlies around, and when she posted about making fake TTVs a little while ago I had to try it!

This is a photo i took a little while ago during a really weird storm. The sky turned a really pretty gold color and it was absolutely beautiful. I think the TTV look fits perfectly!

Here's the tutorial I got through Elsie, courtesy of Joe Philipson. It's a lot of fun too!

sqaures.

so i haven't gotten off of that quilting kick i've been on, but i don't have the time to quilt (plus i really don't know how). so instead i started a granny square blanket!

the colors are a little off in the picture. Deep teal, bright turquoise, and a really bright green/yellow... i'm thinking i'll use the leftover yarn from my coraline to sew it together...

ps: i just remembered my photos are still all messed up. maybe someday i'll get around to fixing that...!

as promised...

remember this post? i finished the shawl a little while ago. it's super cute...

pattern: textured shawl recipe (ravelry link)
yarn and needles: sundara aran silky merino; us 9
start date/end date: june-ish

i really loved working with this yarn... the only issue i had was when i tried winding it from the hank on my ball winder, i don't know... something about the slipperiness of the silk made it impossible to keep in a cake. so the last ball had to suffer through my frustration and i sacrificed about a third of it. the pattern was great, i sorta made up my rows as i went along. i didn't like the way i cast on, which i don't really remember. maybe casting on five or something.... maybe seven... who knows. but it made the nape of the neck sorta rounded and it looks weird. still though. love.

gee golly gosh.

friends, it's been a million years. i've finished some things that i wanted to show you!

pattern: slouched tuva hat (ravelry link)
yarn and needles: vanna's choice in yellow; us 4
start date/end date: sometime in june

how lame is it that i haven't posted an fo since may 1st? prettty lame, i think.

there's more to come, things i'm totally loving right about now...

the main reason i haven't been around for a minute is because my laptop-- my dearly loved laptop-- crapped out on me. well, not actually the laptop, just the power cord. i really didn't want to spend $80 for a new cord for my six year old laptop, so chris and i made our very first big couple-y purchase and got a new desktop! another dell, i love love love dell. so anyway, i was super lazy about putting my camera software onto the new guy, and then i finally got around to it.... but it didn't work. my big camera is too old to be recognized or something, so i had to get a card reader thing.... most awesome piece of technology, by the way. i'm behind on most tech things, i didn't know these things existed, but i am in LOVE! anyway. look forward to meeting me on the interweb more often now. it's a lot faster and less complicated with my new setup!

sewing dreams...

I've been dreaming about making a quilt for our bed for a few years now... Now that I finally have a sewing machine I think it's time to get started! My grandma Jane has quilted forever, so when I go home next I'm going to have her help me out a little. I need to know the basics, like... how much fabric do you need?! I get the principles of sewing together squares, but how do you go about making it into an actual quilt?! In my head I have this idea that I could just whip it together, but we all know that in reality it's a *little* bit more difficult! Anyway, here's some of my inspiration...

... from Urban Outfitters. I am so totally in love with this one, the fabric combinations are killer!!

When I saw Silje's finished quilt I knew I had to get started! I looooove her color choices! This is the kind of style I want to do, big pops of color on a neutral background... Love it!

Here's a closeup of Silje's quilt...

These are pretty much exactly the colors I want to use, and I love all the patterns! Ugh I can't wait to start!!!! Check out afabricoutlet on Etsy, I love her shop!

If anyone has any advice feel free to share!!!
